IDENTIFICATION PROCEDURES

Nomination and Identification Procedures

Just as there is no universal definition of giftedness, there is no single “best” assessment for measuring giftedness. Schools that incorporate multiple measures more accurately identify those students who require gifted services. Parents and teachers should also use multiple criteria for determining whether to nominate a student for gifted testing.

Identifying and Serving Special Populations

Special populations in gifted education include culturally and linguistically diverse students, English language learners, and twice-exceptional gifted students. Non-traditional assessments, inclusive gifted programs, and differentiated instructional strategies can enfranchise these gifted students those historically under-represented in our gifted programs.

Non-verbal Assessment of General Ability

The NNAT is a nonverbal measure of general ability that does not rely on language, yet yields scores predictive of scholastic success. This widely used test requires reasoning and problem solving without using verbal and quantitative skills regularly relied on in school.
